Critical Language Enhancement Award (CLEA)

I was so thrilled that in addition to my Fulbright grant I also received the CLEA: The Critical Language Enhancement Award (CLEA). This provided me an opportunity to receive up-to three months of intensive language study. To my delight the Landour Language School was on the list for me to do the language study.  I had always wanted to study in this school, the same language school my parents attended in 1952!

The  CLEA helped me cultivate a higher levels of language proficiency. Up until this time, my Hindi was very basic, and I had no understanding of its grammar. I wanted to at least be able to communicating effectively in Hindi, and found that at the very least I was able to understand better than I was able to speak. The truth was when I was in position of only speaking Hindi, somehow it all came out right. It was only a stepping stone for me, my bigger goal is to be able to read Hindi with understanding.  This is much harder, since I am more familiar with the body language that accompanies language. So now that I am back in the US. I am spending a little time every day to read Hindi.
